Discovering Statesville: A Summer Intern's Journey

Introduction

As an intern at the Statesville Convention & Visitors Bureau (SCVB), I had the opportunity to discover Statesville during National Travel & Tourism Week. My name is John, and along with the intern from Spokeology, Dylan, we had the opportunity to experience first hand why Statesville is a top choice for Living, Thriving, Discovering.

Before this summer, I had only ever driven through Statesville, if you're like me I would encourage you to stop or you may miss out on a historic town filled with mouthwatering restaurants, exciting activities, and the perfect balance of small-town relaxation and lively happenings. This summer, I am discovering just how special Statesville truly is.

JayBees Hotdogs

Our adventure began with a savory meal at JayBees Hot Dogs. Getting hotdogs with my father was always a fond memory, and JayBees brought those memories right back. The cozy atmosphere and friendly faces made it feel like we had stepped into a beloved small-town joint, a place where everyone knows your name. It was more than just hotdogs; I really appreciated the history of JayBees. Starting in an old convenience store and using old family recipes made the food even more enjoyable.

Beaver Farms You Pick Strawberries

One of the highlights of our week was visiting Beaver Farms, a family-owned farm spanning five generations. As we wandered through the green fields, picking fresh strawberries under the warm sun, it made me feel as if it were my own farm. The sweet aroma of ripe berries and the stories shared by the farm's staff created a sense of timelessness, a reminder of simpler times and traditions you don’t often see today.

The 500 Club

The 500 Club introduced us to another face of Statesville's charm. This local public golf club, with its lively atmosphere for all ages and Saturday night music, was a place where both golfers and non-golfers could relax and enjoy each other’s company. We were able to experience a round of golf while visiting. You can tell the owners put a lot of care and effort into renovating this course. There were many fun and exciting holes that would entice even non-golfer to head out and give it a try. You can really experience the energy of Statesville here with their indoor/outdoor restaurant that features two gold simulators and a fully stocked arcade.

Southern Distilling Company

Visiting Southern Distilling Company was a journey into the rich craft and heritage of distilling in Statesville. Walking through the distillery and learning about the intricate process and history behind it, I developed a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship in every bottle. The tour covered the deep history of bourbon in Statesville, dating back to the pre-Prohibition era. Among their many tasting options, a special bourbon made exclusively with local ingredients from a 20-mile radius stood out. Tasting their award-winning bourbons was not just about savoring the flavors; it was about experiencing a piece of Statesville's robust past.

220 Cafe

220 Cafe was the perfect follow-up to our tour and tasting. We enjoyed an amazing meal that highlighted the freshness and quality of Statesville's local farm ingredients. The restaurant owners are well-known in the community, and customers frequently rave about their specialties. I savored the 220 Chicken sandwich, and even now, writing about it makes me want to head back immediately. Located in the heart of downtown, 220 Cafe is a gem in Statesville's vibrant food scene.

First Flight Bicycles

Cycling through the scenic trails highlighted by First Flight Bicycles gave us a fresh perspective on Statesville's natural beauty. The staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, offering valuable insights about the best local spots and bike options. Renting a bike for the afternoon was easy and convenient, making it a great activity to enjoy alone or with a group. This would be a wonderful experience for my grandmother, who loves nothing more than riding her bike. The afternoon offered the perfect balance of exercise, fresh air, and fun, it felt like a mission statement fulfilled from First Flight Bicycles.

Big Oh! Balloons

Big Oh! Balloons provided one of the most breathtaking experiences of our week—and my life. Arriving early at an astonishing old house built in 1895 was a treat in itself. The sight of the enormous balloon taking up the entire yard was awe-inspiring as we prepared for takeoff. Ascending into the sky in the hot air balloon, we saw Statesville from a new perspective. The landscape below was covered in forests, fields, and sightings of wild and farm animals. This unforgettable adventure left me amazed by the beauty of Statesville and what it has to offer, and it was just the start of our Thursday. Bucket list item checked to say the least.

Serenity Alpacas

Interacting with the gentle animals at Serenity Alpacas was a sincere and heartwarming experience. These curious animals, with their soft fleece and gentle demeanor, made me feel like a kid on a field trip again. Learning about their care and the farm’s operations highlighted how well-loved and happy these animals are. The owners shared all the amazing qualities of their fur and its uses, such as toys, scarves, yarn, and soap. The most amazing part was that the owner remembered the name of each alpaca, and each had a distinct personality. One alpaca even loves kisses—just hold your nose up to his, and you'll make each other's day!

The Quarter

Finishing the evening at The Quarter was a perfect wrap-up to the day. With its vibrant atmosphere and cuisine inspired by Bourbon Street and the French Quarter, it offered a lively evening of dining and socializing. We arrived a bit early, but the ambiance inspired me to bring my girlfriend back for a date night soon. The restaurant, featuring both indoor and outdoor seating, was fantastic, a bar and the music was perfectly on theme. The fresh seafood and quality drinks, complemented by the dynamic setting, made it an ideal spot for a memorable adult night out, especially since it's an 18+ venue.

Historic Fort Dobbs

Then we were able to explore Fort Dobbs, if you love history or just want to see some really cool old artifacts this place is for you.  The guide provided us with an amazing walk through the colonial past of Statesville. The fort dates back to the French and Indian war era where we were able to learn about the importance of this fort while walking through it. The knowledgeable guides brought history to life with captivating stories and demonstrations, making it an educational and enriching experience that left a lasting impression.

Smokin' Southern Cantina

Finally, our week concluded with a meal at Smokin’ Southern Cantina, where the rich, smoky flavors of Southern cuisine left us craving more. The restaurant boasts a warm ambiance with vibrant colors and Southern-themed decor. The owners take pride in highlighting Southern cuisines from east to west, drawing customers in with their lively outdoor seating and the exceptional quality of their meals. I enjoyed a burrito with street corn that tasted just like the real deal. This is a fantastic restaurant for anyone looking to experience authentic Southern cuisine in Statesville while enjoying a variety of styles.

Conclusion

Overall, my first week in Statesville was almost too good to be true. Each experience, from savoring hot dogs at JayBees to cycling through scenic trails and exploring historical sites like Fort Dobbs, left me eager to share these moments with others. I am already planning to bring my mom and grandmother to show them how amazing it truly is. Saying there's nothing to do in Statesville couldn't be further from the truth. The city is bursting with unique experiences, delicious cuisine, and engaging activities—all within a short distance. With Statesville only growing, now is the perfect time to dive in and explore everything it has to offer. Whether you're a local or just passing through, you'll find plenty to love about this vibrant, welcoming city.
