Regenerative Agriculture is at the Heart of Hart Family Farms

by Candace Lagerhausen

Originally from Winston, Elizabeth Hart always considered herself a city girl. Until one day, she realized she wanted a change of pace, and set out to create a life on a farm. “I needed a total life change”, Elizabeth said as she shared how she met her husband, Jared, and got into agriculture. While Jared had been a farmer his whole life, he had always practiced conventional farming, and was going through some hard times, causing him to leave the farming industry for a bit. Not long after leaving, though, Jared came across regenerative agriculture, and thought it would be a good way for them to get back into farming.

In 2018, Elizabeth and Jared were married, and moved to Harmony to start Hart Family Farms. There, they raise chickens, pigs, and cattle, which are moved to fresh grass frequently, so that they don’t overgraze in any one area, as “regenerative agriculture is about focusing on soil health”, Elizabeth said. She added, “we hope that we can serve our community with nutrient dense food, that’s our main goal, and we do it through soil health”. Hart Family Farms attends a couple of different farmers markets and have their products available for purchase online through their website.
