The Summer Solstice - Animals and Fun Things to do!

The Summer Solstice is known as the longest day and shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.  Many of our childhood memories connected to summer include beaches, pools, picnics, summer camps, and more. Warm summer evenings involved catching fireflies, camping, and riding bikes with our friends until the street lights came on.

The longer days and shorter nights can mean changes for humans and animals, especially those living closest to the artic circle.  Here at Rescue Ranch - the start of summer also represents the growing season for many fresh vegetables and herbs - which our animals love.  Right now, our animal ambassadors are loving all of the fresh produce growing in our garden started by the Iredell County Master Gardeners program.

Aside from planting a garden, there are many other fun activities you can do to celebrate the Summer Solstice.  A quick google search brought us to this Kids Konnect article with 9 fun and educational summer solstice activities

  • Teach children how to create a DIY sundial
  • Make flower crowns
  • Fly kites in a park
  • Gather fresh fruits, veggies or herbs

What will you do to celebrate the summer solstice in 2023?
