Upcoming Elections and Voter ID Requirements

As residents of the vibrant City of Statesville, it's essential to stay informed about local governance and actively participate in the democratic process. The City Council serves as the governing body, making important decisions that impact our community's growth and development. The City Council:

Statesville City Council of consists of nine members, including the Mayor. Six members represent specific wards, ensuring fair and balanced representation across the city. In addition, two members are elected at-large, bringing diverse perspectives to the Council. With the Mayor completing the council, these dedicated individuals work collaboratively to address the city's needs and promote progress.

Elections and Runoff Elections:

Regular municipal elections take place every two years in odd-numbered years and are conducted in accordance with state laws governing municipal elections. The election process in Statesville follows a nonpartisan approach, meaning candidates run without party affiliations. If no candidate receives a majority of votes during the initial election, a runoff election is held between the top candidates to determine the winner.

Upcoming Election - October 10, 2023:

Mark your calendars for the upcoming election scheduled for October 10, 2023. In this election, Council members representing Wards 1, 4, and 6 will be chosen. Residents of these wards will have the opportunity to cast their votes and select the candidates who will represent their interests on the City Council.

Early Voting

Early Voting will begin September 21, 2023 for the October 10, 2023 Municipal Elections.  Voters who live inside the City of Statesville and are in Wards 1, 4, & 6 as well as voters who live inside the Town of Mooresville will be eligible to vote.  Mooresville is having a Primary Election for the Commissioner At-Large seat.

Candidate Filing:

Candidate filing for the election began on July 7 and will conclude on July 21 at 12 pm. This is the period during which individuals interested in running for office can submit their candidacy for consideration. To participate in the City Council elections, aspiring candidates must complete the filing process with the Iredell County Board of Elections within this timeframe.

Voter ID Requirements:

Starting with the 2023 municipal elections, voters in North Carolina will be required to show photo identification when checking in to vote. This new requirement ensures the integrity of the voting process and protects against potential fraud. Voters must present an acceptable form of photo ID to verify their identity before casting their ballots. Additionally, those voting by mail will be asked to include a photocopy of an acceptable ID when returning their ballot.

Free Photo ID Cards Now Available for Voters

Starting with the 2023 Municipal elections, voters will be asked to show photo ID.  Any voter who does not have an acceptable photo ID card for voting can now get a free photo ID from their county board of elections.  Click on the attached link for more information or call the Iredell County Board of Elections office at 704-878-3140.
