Iredell Adult Day Services Launches Support Group for Caregivers

Last Updated 3/6/2025Posted in News

Iredell Adult Day Services – a nonprofit organization dedicated to caring for older adults, vulnerable groups, and their families – will kick off a new support group for caregivers with an inaugural dinner and meeting. The support group is co-sponsored by the Iredell Council on Aging, a not-for-profit agency devoted to improving quality of life and maintaining independent living for Iredell’s older adults (60+).

The support group, called Caring Connections, will help caregivers build a community of friends and serve as a sounding board for challenges they’re facing. The group will also share information about local resources that families can tap into for additional help. Meetings will be held monthly on Tuesdays, from 5:30pm till 7:30pm.

The first meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at 5:30pm at Iredell Adult Day Services (502 Brevard Street in Statesville, NC). Dinner will be served, and there is no cost to attend. The initial meeting will be informational, organizational in nature, and will encourage attendees to get to know one another. Anyone in Iredell County who cares for a loved one is invited to attend.

To reserve a place, call 704-873-0720 (Debbie) or 704-873-5171 (Jackie) by 12 noon on Monday, March 10. You may also email your RSVP to [email protected].

Caring Connections is intended to help caregivers maintain their own health and well-being as they provide care to others. The group is designed to support people who are experiencing the following:

· Caring for family members or friends who are elderly or seriously ill

· Going to doctors’ appointments, making meals, and picking up medications for the person in need

· Having feelings of anger or sadness

· Putting aside their own needs, feelings, and family members to care for someone else

· Feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities and obligations

About Iredell Adult Day Services

Originally founded as ElderCenter, Iredell Adult Day Services was created more than 35 years ago when a study revealed that Iredell County’s biggest need was for supervised adult day care. The Iredell Council on Aging (COA) initiated a community-wide call for resources to meet this senior care void, and First Presbyterian Church of Statesville responded, along with other local churches, the Department of Social Services, and grants from the United Way and the State of North Carolina. Contributions from businesses and individuals continue to be instrumental in the care that IADS provides as a nonprofit organization.

Iredell Adult Day Services cares for participants from 7:30 am till 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Adults of all ages are welcome, and IADS specializes in senior care for memory-impaired diagnoses such as Alzheimer's, dementia, TBI, stroke, and other learning disabilities. The secure, comfortable setting is host to a range of activities, including Bingo, arts and crafts, games, puzzles, movies, and music programs. Day trips are also planned on a regular basis. While at IADS, participants are offered breakfast, lunch, and a light snack, all approved by a certified dietitian. Family members can rest easy knowing that their loved ones are enjoying social interaction and positive stimulation, along with professional supervision and care. They are also free to work and run errands during the day and still have their loved ones at home with them each night.

About Iredell Council on Aging

The Iredell Council on Aging is a private, not-for-profit agency devoted to improving quality of life and maintaining independent living for Iredell’s older adults, 60 and older. There is no set fee for services, but clients are encouraged to make a contribution based on their income.

Funding for the COA comes from several sources: The Older Americans’ Act, passed in 1965, allots federal tax dollars to each state for various services. Local funds from Iredell County, Town of Mooresville, City of Statesville, support from United Way of Iredell County, agency fundraising, contributions from participants and business provide revenue.

The organization features two senior centers: Iredell Senior Center in Statesville and South Iredell Senior Center in Mooresville. These centers have some fees, but all contributions go back into the services or programs. Requests for services can be made by individuals, family members, doctors, home health agencies, hospitals, and extended care facilities.
